Activities and attractions

There are a wealth of activities and attractions in the area.

Glencoe is on our doorstep for opportunities to walk or climb, plus skiing in Winter. Click this link for descriptions of local walks: http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/fortwilliam/glencoe.shtml

Also, water sports, mountain biking, horse riding, and golf (the new 9 hole Dragon's Tooth course is only a mile away) are all available locally.

Or learn more of the glen's historic past and the tragedy of the 1692 massacre at the new visitor centre.

Evoke scenes in Robert Louis Stevenson's novel "Kidnapped" by walking to the Appin Murder Cairn in the woods only a few hundred metres from Craiglinnhe! You can also visit the monument to 'James of the Glen', who was wrongly hanged for the murder, close by the Ballachulish Bridge.

The film version of "Kidnapped" was made in this area and the West Highlands have featured in many other films over the years from Alfred Hitchcock's adaptation of John Buchan's novel "The 39 Steps", made in 1935, to the latest Harry Potter adventure "The Chamber of Secrets" in 2002.

Fort William, to the North, sits at the foot of Ben Nevis (Britain's highest mountain) and provides for more climbing, walking and skiing. Alternatively, you can take a ride in the Nevis Range gondola for a less demanding way to get a bird's eye view of the surrounding countryside! Or, for a really gentle pastime, there's simply shopping!

To the South, Oban has shops too but it is also the starting point for boat trips to the islands, such as Mull and Iona (the birthplace of Christianity in Scotland).
